What “Fully Serviced” Means for a Vintage Lens – and What to Check Before You Buy
Most Soviet and vintage lenses are 40–70 years old. The glass is usually fine, but the mechanics age: grease hardens, oil moves where it should not, and dust gets inside. That is why many lenses in our shop are marked [Fully Serviced]. Here is what that means and how to check any vintage lens yourself.
Why old lenses need a service
- Hardened grease. The original factory grease dries out over the decades. The focus ring becomes stiff or uneven, which is especially annoying for video.
- Oil on the aperture blades. Old grease can separate, and the oil slowly reaches the aperture blades. Oily blades stick and close slowly or not at all.
- Dust, haze and fungus. After decades in drawers and camera bags, lenses often collect dust, haze or even fungus on the glass.
What our full service includes
- The lens is completely disassembled and the old hardened grease is removed.
- It is lubricated with new, temperature-resistant grease (for example Castrol LMX Li-Komplexfett or Molykote 33 Medium). It does not melt if the lens is left in a car on a hot summer day and does not run onto the aperture blades.
- The aperture blades are washed to remove the old grease.
- All glass is cleaned of dust or mould (if any).
- The lens is assembled according to the instructions, exactly as it is done at the factory.
The result is a lens with smooth focus from start to end, dry and snappy aperture blades and clean glass – ready to use, not a project.
Checklist: how to inspect a vintage lens
- Focus ring: turn it from minimum focus to infinity. It should move smoothly, with even resistance and no grinding.
- Aperture: open and close the diaphragm several times. The blades should be dry (no shiny oil) and move freely.
- Glass: shine a flashlight through the lens from the back. Look for haze (a milky layer), fungus (thin “spider web” lines) and dust. A few specks of dust are normal and do not affect photos; haze and fungus do.
- Scratches and cleaning marks: small marks on the front element rarely show in photos, but deep scratches can reduce contrast.
- Mount: check that the thread or bayonet is not damaged and the lens reaches infinity focus on your adapter.
